Regarding the $50 companion certs- I have used them for multicity trips (booked over the phone, granted). I'm not sure if this is official policy or if I've gotten lucky.

Regarding booking multicity trips- if, in fact, you're still getting an internet error, I'd suspect that your contact at reservations would waive the $10 fee if you explained your situation.
