Here in BOS, the Guard just seems to be wandering around the terminals-they don't seem to be participating in the random gate screening the TSA people are doing, at least not that I've seen in the AA terminal. Last weekend @ LAX the flight before mine had random gate searches done by TSA but 'supervised' by 3 Guard-not sure which group was 'selecting' the selectees. GA's still did the BP thing.
