I modified my preferences a while back just to be certain it wouldn't interfere with upgrades. Non-smoking is still a must have, and I still want to be away from elevators (and noise), but I really don't need a king bed just for myself - in fact Mrs BamaVol and I are comfortable together in anything bigger than a cot on wheels.

That said, I occasionally ask for a room away from noise after I check out the clerk's choice. I've been turned down once that I recall in a full hotel after midnight.
