Surely you are right. In your scenario the "free ticket" works quite
well. For me out of Hawaii it doesn't, or at least I loose too many
miles. So, a "x-amount off" offer always trumps the free ticket.
Come to think of it, I don't think they ever offered a free ticket
here in Hawaii, they always offer a certain dollar amount off as
an incentive.

Since I invariably use the $$$ off against tix to Europe which is something that I can't do with the "free ticket" vouchers, perhaps that colors my opininion a bit. I don't have a problem keeping enough miles on hand to book the free tickets I may want. What I run out of more quickly are time and money -- something the $$$ vouchers are helpful with.

But I certainly agree YMMV and that is why having a choice has value.
