My solution for short work trips is to send toothpaste and hair gel by FedEx. I can then avoid checking bags. Unfortunately, since my work is funded by the US Government, that means that taxpayers (i.e., you) are paying for the FedEx, in both directions + the time a secretary takes to package it up and fill out the forms.
