Good news: I was at an airport today and got my AF tickets and my whole reservation changed without any questions asked. The AF tickets are stickered and I was advised to pay a change fee to AA to have the AA/CA flights changed in the US when I get there.
More good news: All four AF flights next year where available to upgrade and I am confirmed in business on all four ...
I know there is minimal to great risk of running into problems in the states if I try to board (option a) one of the three american flights with the ticket as is. I am however contemplating this over option b), which would be changing the tickets at an AA counter. I wonder what they would do with my stickered AF coupons back to BUD when they try to reprice ... Or would everything be fine because they would just reprice the AA portion, and I'd just pay the change fee?
Option C) is to skip the domestic fligths, which seems doable as well.
