After switching to non-gel deodorant, the only products I needed to find replacement for was hair gel and tooth paste and as most hotels will hand out free toothpaste, and I carry floss and 2-3 oral-b "brush ups" just in case, I don't bother with tooth paste.
I've since carried on a small plastic container of hair gel on board each flight, after my first trip once the madness started, using a travel sized tube in my pocket. No metal, so the WTMD is no problem, and bag checks at the gate don't include a pat down so no problem there either. In short this has worked 6 out of 6 times I've tried ^
Finally, if I ever am caught with it, I'll simply say that I though up to 4 oz of personal care items were now allowed.
