I work for Starwood, and you are right, P does stand for platinum, and the computer system, Opera, should have this noted if the number is there.

However, having worked at reception, it's not always physically possible to give an upgrade to platinum members due to availability, especially at the moment, as it's still the summer holidays. Although, we do try our best to make sure the platinum members get an upgrade.

On the fake card note, I only ask to see a card if I'm wanting to get the guests SPG number if I can't find it on Opera. No other reason than that!
