The process is seamless; CO and NW have done a good job at this reciprocity program. I prefer CO to NW, but I have flown on NW as a CO elite. It's been two years, but I recall it much easier to get upgrades on NW--maybe I was just lucky.
Domestically, I have found this to be true and they do it well for the most part. Some give me grudging looks like one lady in connecting bag services in MSP did once for a MSP-YYZ flight. I get upgraded even on short flights from YYZ-DTW. The cabin crew on a NRT-HKG flight let me sit in WBC as an extension of Coach service because the WBC was COMPLETELY EMPTY! wow!
