If you're flying QF, then rows 70-73 on the 747s are 2-4-2, back where the plane body gets narrower. I am an aisle person, my BF is a window person, and neither of us can stand anything else. I reserved 70J and 70K a month in advance so we could sit together. I just did this flight (LAX-SYD and then MEL-LAX) last month, and we were very happy...well, as happy as we COULD be on a 14-hour flight in coach.

Thank you seatguru!
I can also report that BOTH flights on QF in July were absolutely, 100% full in coach. There were no empty middle seats at all, so don't hope for it. Of course, November will be less crowded than July, since the US is no longer on summer vacation, but it's best not to chance it.
