I usually pay the fare and then use my miles to upgrade, it is a LONGGGGGGGGGGG flight and they have been quite full as of recent.
It is a great deal. I decided to snag an AA F AAward for 80K down there, and routed the on the 777 thru MIA. It beats the usual F AAward 125K price tag. Sure, I could use the miles to requalify for EXP, but I figured I could pull off two trips to Europe and gain even a few more miles than paying the one high round trip price to EZE.
My eVIP's only get me to upgraded to J from the coach fares that I can afford, so it will be a bit of a treat to fly in F on a 777 for a change. Sure, it's likely the "coffins" instead of the "suites", but it 'sho beats a 757
