Sometime in the 80s, there was an insert offering Premier status on United. It was May or June of that particular year. The deal was to fly 10,000 miles withing a given amount of time, and you would be Premier for the rest of the year. I decided to go for it and have been Premier or Premier Exec every year since. The promotion definitely got me hooked!
Regarding inside Flyer, I was one of the very first subscribers going way back. But what puzzles me is that I never receive renewal notices. Instead, the monthly issues just stop coming and then I have to call and complain. Oh well.
