Pretty much as USA_flyer says - however when I was there last year it was pleasantly warm with some cracking clear days - I clearly remember flying between SFO and LAX on the MD80 with AA and being able to see the whole californian coast line without a cloud in sight!

I'm sure the whole flight could have been flown VFR!
