from that point on, I always make sure that the person who receives the returned car signed the 'damage assessment' paperwork that car rental companies have you mark on if there are damages when you receive the car. this way, i will always have evidence that someone at the company inspected the car upon return, and concluded that the condition is acceptable.
my Malibu had a damaged right front bumper when i picked it up. i x'd the area on the check list before i leave the lot. woudn't that be good enough in your defense?
though to be honest with ya, the lady at the gate didn't even verify the damage areas where i have marked on the checklist
