You can no longer obtain a passport the same day with any amount of ease (if at all). The NYC passport office only issues passports for those traveling within 14 days and it now operates by appointment only. Details here. Many other passport agencies in large cities work the same way. In the recent past I've found it impossible to get a same-day appointment when trying to help firends.
