I did some checking after the flight, and it looks like this rule is not actually a TSA rule, but the policy of most airlines who are not sure what the rule is about liquids bought after the security screening!
I'll take this at face value, but I would be surprised if many FTers didn't know the rules by now (as opposed to wanting to test the enforcement of the rules). I would have found your comment inappropriate (i.e. "train the gate agent").
