I think you'll be fine as long as you're, I hate to say it, discrete. Some friends recently took a road trip from SF to Chicago and say they wouldn't do it again. A couple of times they felt awkward in restaurants, lot of people staring. Probably easier for 2 women to travel through America than 2 men.
