Kiosk offered upgrade HNL - DFW

So, yes, I don't know much about flying etc., but

On the 4:55pm flight from HNL to DFW on Tuesday, August 15:

A gentleman next to me at the gate desk asked the agent if he could still upgrade to first as offered at the kiosk, but declined. She barely looked at him and said it was too late.

Yes, of course its probably too late 45 minutes before the flight boards, but I was surprised that it was even offered. On the way over, July 27, the flight attendant told me that the flight was oversold...and FC was filled with kids. Despite the young teens in front of me, it was a very comfortable 7+ hours; not including the good flights from Boston and to Kona.

I almost asked him what the upgrade cost was....and he probably should have taken it since he was a rather large man.

As it turned out, the two front right hand seats were left empty. When a man went to sit in one of them (moved from middle seats) the flight attendant quickly quipped at him about moving back. I did see one of the pilots in the seat at some point later.
