i always hold on to my big bottled water, drink during the climb, etc. i've been able to hold on to cupped beverages until pre-takeoff (on HP and UA iirc too). there are variations in several procedures/practices pre-takeoff even within UsAir's express partners. these issues are all dwarfed by the website and IT integration problems, imho.
