FWIW, the NY Times did a piece on JNB a few weeks ago in the travel section, pointing out a number of tourist attractions. It received a letter to the editor the following week, from a JNB resident IIRC, chastising them for not even mentioning the crime problem, which includes carjacking, among other things mentioned here.
