Grrrr, looks like you've jinxed me.

I changed a flight earlier this week with no fee of any kind and the new flight didn't even have my original inventory available. I call today to do the same thing on another reservation (ironically, this time the new flight is practically empty) and I've been told by two EXP agents that while there's no $100 change fee I still have to pay the rather substantial fare difference.
Has anyone else's experience been similar? I'm trying determine which practice was actually the correct one (and whether I should try calling back for another agent).
