I've had that experience before too - but I had a different experience when I flew from IAH to EWR on Friday morning, the day after the latest plot arrests made news.
I got there early, and the lines at check-in were snaking around, all the way outside the building. It was chaos. I walked in, found the Elite check-in, walked through the Elite line at security...all in under 10 minutes.
Elite is definitely worth it's weight sometimes!!!
