A bit more information would be helpful. UA flies 2 different configurations of the 757 - the "standard" 757-200 and the PS version. If you are on a PS flight - JFK-SFO/LAX - 9A is a very good seat. On the other version, it is still a good exit row seat, but with a few caveats. What the agent was telling you about is the emergency exit slide enclosure, which projects partially into your legroom. It is not a real problem, but can force you to angle your legs a bit if you want to stretch out. There is no under seat storage.
