Not knowing the exact circumstances of who the moved passengers were makes the point a bit weak, but creating a win-lose situation is only marginally "nice". Nice for the OP but not so nice for the person being re-assigned back to Y. The fact that the agent had to use a small deception does not in my mind make this a generally commendable action.
