Since no security measure, barring stopping all aviation, is 100% foolproof, the best we can hope for is to make things as difficult as possible for would be terrorists and hope that the increased scrutiny through multiple layers, plus prior intelligence work, will foil any actual attempt.
What's sad is that this could have been done many years ago. Why had they not stopped liquids from coming on board after 9/11? To me airport security is a complete joke. If someone is determined enough they will get what they want on board and do the damage. That's a very scary thought, yet it is a very real possibility. If this is such a threat, the ban on liquids and gels should have been in place many years ago. Seems to me that terrorists are one step ahead of security. Why wait for the terrorists to come up with a way to bomb an aircraft, stop it before they even think of the idea.
