This is precisely what I've been thinking. As much as the strict new regulations are a tad bit OTT I will try either postpone travel, if I can or to rethink my packing.
However, what says that cargo hold luggage is safer than carry on? Someone could easily bring something on in a checked in suitcase and once over ground and in mobile phone signal range, someone on ground could call a phone in the hold to trigger a bomb. (Or am I completely barking mad here?)
I mean, how many hear haven't told stories on travel tech about forgetting to turn off their phone only to realise the mistake once it started ringing while descending to an airport?
As much as I understand security at airports need an overhaul (I've walked through chekpoints at LHR with a leatherman, which they didn't even bother to take through x-ray machines walking between terminals - pre 9/11 though. I've also walked in to the back of another airport in another country escorted by a friend who was working there who simply told the internal security checkpoint I was someone applying for a job. I was given a pass and was following my friend around while s/he was doing the job. Even got all the way on board an aircraft. Also pre 9/11) I think they also need to look at internal security.
