On some level I can almost envision this as an evil attempt by "businesses" to encourage us to buy more things when we fly as we can no longer bring them from home.
I, too, had thoughts similar to those in your second paragraph. Certainly, Dr. Scholl's is not going to complain to anyone.
Claim that your shoes are orthopedic shoes and that you can't take them off because walking in barefeet as well as taking your shoes off and putting them back on causes pain. Believe me it does. I have a condition in both feet for which I use simple Dr. Scholl's inserts or orthotics - but it's very painful walking in barefeet and putting shoes on and taking them off.
