I've tried looking up something from LAX to BNE on the assumption that I can get the family to/from LAX on Southwest for $800 or so total. But still I get nada-bupkiss under $1K, which makes me think I'm being stupid.

We need to travel out in late december and back in late december.

Well, unfortunately you picked the busiest two weeks of the year to go to Australia. It's Australia's summer, the entire world is on vacation, etc. If I were you, I'd be pleased to find something under $1500/person for Y. Even if you had the miles to pay for all or part of your family, I believe award inventory would still be pretty hard to come by.

I wish I could tell you something more encouraging and helpful, but.....
