Many companies with 800 numbers also have "backdoor" non-800 numbers (local numbers) you can call instead of the 800 number. These are very useful from overseas, although hard to find out from the company. Perhaps we could share here what we know. The one I use all the time from overseas is:

United Airlines Reservations 1-312-364-1989
