Somewhat upthread, someone had mentioned Stonehenge as a day trip, and suggested doing it yourself instead of going with a package tour. I tend to dislike package tours, but I was considering one for this, since it seemed like it wasn't particular easy to get to Stonehenge from London without renting a car. Is that correct, or is it easier than my guidebook is making it out to be?
I too hate going on organized tours, but also came to the conclusion that taking the bus tour was the most practical way of seeing Stonehenge. Most tours will take the whole day and depending on which one you take, also do side trips in the area, such as to Bath or to see other such sites such as the burial mounds in the area, chalk figures, and sites where there are magnetic anomolies or crop circles (to go with the Stonegenge-ey theme).

I believe it is possible to travel out there as a side-trip just to see Stonehenge, but it just didn't seem as worthwhile and efficient as the combined tour, which will pick you up from your hotel.
