My guess and experience is that the codes are model dependent and identical for each model. The first code they emailed didn't work, then we supplied the correct Blackberry model #, 7290, and the new emailed code worked perfectly on both of our phones.
Cingular will unlock your phone once you're 90 days into your contract, or they'll unlock it immediately if you bought the phone unsubsidized.

The code is usually based on the IMEI (ID#) of the phone and model, so it's specific to your phone only.
