I don't really like staying in either, but in general would prefer the Holiday Inn Express, which sort of compares to a Hampton Inn in the Hilton Program.
La Quinta Inn IMHO is at least one step below: Normally rooms are accessible from outsite walkways, and the "breakfast" consists of some donuts and bagels.
