My father had one probably around the mid-80's, I think Motorolla maybe... Probably through Houston Cellular.

It was about 11"x6"x8"high, with a handset corded to the base and a shoulder strap for the whole unit.

He used it in his Toyota Minivan (the ones with the engine under the driver's seat). There was an awful racket of static and road noise whenever we received a call from him -- but amidst all that we could usually make him out.

I think he graduated to something more advanced and smaller by the early 90's, but, being in the extreme outskirts of houston meant that he required a supplemental antenna. It was a magnetic thing that viciously stuck to the roof of his Cutlass Cierra. The cord snaked from the roof into the car through the door and was thick enough to permanently leave a small gap where the wind would come in when the antenna was no longer present, when the car was handed down to me. I had to be careful going through the car wash.
