My experience is that occassionally they don't check that carefully but that most of the time they do. If it was me, I wouldn't want to take the chance of them checking carefully in that situation. It would probably be worse for the person whose card it is than you, but I wouldn't want to be either.
If you thought you had a good chance of getting away with stealing something from a store, does that mean you would do it???
