What fare classes can be upgraded and how many points does it take one way? Does anyone have a clear understanding of this?
Calling Continental is the easiest way to have these questions answered. That number is (800)344-1411.
You can upgrade a Y using 10,000 miles or an H using 20,000 miles. Neither requires payment. You'll find the information if you dig through the menus as follows:
Home > OnePass > Use Miles > Upgrade Rewards > Charts > Series 6 Upgrade Rewards
There's a link called "See complete details and fee schedule" which provides more details on discounted fares. A K fare costs $200 to upgrade; the discounted economy fares (Q, I, S, W, T, X, L) require a payment of $450. If you're flying one of these fares, you'd end up paying $900 to upgrade the entire journey--over and back. It may be less expensive to buy an H fare.
