never been bumped on CO (couldnt afford to)
but in past i've done something like this a couple of times if a flight
was cancelled or sold out.

I've taken an option to visit some different city (a hub) spend an evening with
friends hang out and take the morning flight out to my final destination.

it has worked out very well.
