I have a friend who is in management on a professional sports team. For non-VIP config flights, first class is for coaches, management, owners, etc.

Players typically sit in back, one or two to a row to account for their size. Sometimes the "stars" will get preferred treatment up front, though from what I understand the service and catering is spectacular on these flights, espescially the transcons.
