If you are really set on using UA miles to u/g, then I think your best bet would be to fly UA and try to u/g on them. You will need to buy either M/H fare (30,000 miles u/g each way) or Y/B fare (15,000 miles each way).

My suggestion would be to call UA and ask them if the flights you are interested in have confirmable u/g space available. If so, and the price is acceptable to you, book it THEN over the phone, paying the extra $10 or $15. (Very much worth it, IMO, in order to snag a confirmed u/g.)

I suspect all of your other alternatives will end up with a Y seat. I hope I'm wrong, for your sake.
