If I understand you correctly I can purchase the economy fare online as early as possible, and then upgrade to first class online (I'll have to investigate this) or by phone or at the airport (if still available). Although, I suppose there is a certain amount of risk because if FC is sold out early, then I will have to fly economy.
Please correct me if I have mis-stated your point. Thanks for the help!
