It could also have something to do with the fire-retardant qualities of treated cloth versus leather - I would guess this has something to do with it.

Then again, I've never known leather to burn easily. Personally I prefer leather on short-hauls, but due to the body heat situation/stickiness like cloth on my long hauls.
