People on the same record generally get the status of the most elite passenger in the group. However, on balance, the probability of getting upgraded may be slightly lower, because if only one upgraded seat becomes available, a group will likely be passed over in favor of a solo traveler. I don't believe that Delta has a policy to ask if the group is willing to split up, but maybe some agents will do that.
