I definitely agree that more needs to be done at the gate area instead of just putting big numbers on the boarding passes to better orchestrate the boarding process.

I also think there should be a supply of dunce caps by the card reader for people who try to board when they're not supposed to -- pull them out of line and make them wear the cap until it's their turn.
