This is probably true for ORD-PVG where you're chasing the sun, but it is definitely not true for PVG-ORD.

Since you're flying very close to the date of the equinox (where day and night are approximately 12 hours each all over the globe), the routing doesn't matter. What you should experience is sunset within an hour or 2 of takeoff followed by a short (approx. 6 hour) night followed by daylight the rest of the way.
