Can I get the ticket for her under 'infant under 2 years in lap' category?
No.

Will there be any problem while returning?
Yes. Since it's an international flight, the airline will see her passport and you'll have to cough up a full fare or be denied boarding. You may be denied boarding anyway if the flight is full.

Or Do I have to pay for the 'child 2-12 years' category even if she will be less than 2 years while going and I intend to keep her in the lap?
The only way around this would be to buy a one-way ticket for her return and add her as a lap child for the outbound. Unless you also have one-way tickets, you'll probably have to pay 10% of the RT fare plus the one-way child fare. Since you're staying over 3 months, you're probably not on super-cheap excursion fare tickets so this might be cheaper than paying for a RT from the US.

You could also buy her a RT starting in India and either throw away the return leg or use it for her next trip to India, subject to the fare rules of course. For certain fares, this could indeed be cheaper since you're buying in India...

Good luck,

Michael
