to answer your question with statements from the Hon desk:

yes, it is regularly confirmed - even by the check in desk when picking up the boarding pass.

No, normally it doesn't work or only in rare cases. Most extreme experience was a flight from Munich to Prague, Y nearly empty and one other pax sitting beneath me in the same row and on the same side as me in a tiny Avroliner. At least five or six rows completely empty.

My conclusion: It is an urban myth and together with other Hons I already recommended to the head of M&M to stop promising it.
