Per my experience seat blocking works mostly okay in C cabin, but doesn't work in the F cabin. The only downside for me is, that I am usually on runner routes with heavily booked cabins. Then it can't work, of course.

Regarding "long haul planes never get a bus gate at FRA...": Funny I had the situation twice sitting in 83A chatting with the FA in front of me upon landing in FRA. Exactly got that statement by the FA and did see a red face and got a "Oh ?!?!" a few minutes later...
