Not that I in any way support what he had on his laptop, but he should have been using better security.

My organization is about to deploy some encryption software similar to TrueCrypt (info here ) because most every laptop user has highly sensitive data (proprietary, subcontractor-proprietary, financial, personnel etc) stored on his/her computer.

IT is rolling out the encryption as mandatory because they want to avoid situations like the missing VA laptop and other notable cases. In fact, our parent organization had a laptop go missing that housed personal data on some 20,000 travel credit card holders! So, if someone's laptop gets swiped, then the data is totally useless. I have a buddy who is one of the techs and he said they tested 3 different machines using software similar to what CBP used and they couldn't recover anything.
