Under UA rules, standbys are only permissible on domestic flights. However, if there are seats available and the gate agents are nice, you may find success on international standbys as well. In your situation, it doesn't look good since Y is full/oversold. May be it's worthwhile to call UA reservation and ask whether the flights are oversold before heading to the airport earlier.
