Although I did the trek to LGW, LGW is NOT very convenient if most of your travels are to the west of London. Cities like Farnborough (you may have heard about a small airshow held there recently), Reading, and Basingstoke are home to many companies, including HP, Verizon, Siemens, Fujitsu, Lockheed Martin, Oracle, etc.)
Flying into LGW adds the joy of having to drive on the M25 ring road and about an hour (assuming no traffic snarls) to any travels to the west (the M3 and/or the M4). It's especially fun to do immediately after getting off an overnight flight from the US and trying to reacquaint yourself with driving on the left side of the road.
In fact, my corporate travel department repeatedly questioned me on why I was taking flights to LGW at all, when flights to LHR were available. I also caught unending grief from coworkers.
