Apart from getting a map of LA, how would I know where to look, and where not to?

Also the zip code of the area I will be in is 90069, is there any neighbourhoods close to that where I should definitely stay away from?

(sorry for all the questions, I have only been to LA once, and that was for 2 days... 3 mos is very different )
